| | Following the programme Pedigree Dogs Exposed, people have woken up to the cruel practices that go on to achieve a particular 'look' in a breed. One such practice is father-daughter, brother-sister matings, resulting in increased hereditary diseases, many of which cause the animals extreme suffering.
Here is a petition started by the vet Joe Inglis, if you'd like to sign:

| | i saw that programme demeter, is made my blood boil watching those breeders trying to tell everyone that "all dogs try to scratch their necks", when there was a cavalier twitching non-stop as it had a brain problem, caused through inbreeding.
Money, is the real reason that they breed dogs, they are not dog lovers, that is obvious.
The Kennel Club came over as a bunch on inbreds themselves, denying that there was anything wrong with inbreeding, and trying to cover up the facts that were presented to them. |

| | Yup, and Rhodesian Ridgebacks without ridges aren't Ridgebacks of course, and have to be culled at birth, even though the ridge is a form of spina bifida!!
How they've got away with it for so long is beyond me. That Cavalier breeder who bred from her ill dog should be prosecuted - she is knowingly causing unnecessary suffering, which undoubtedly qualifies as abuse. |

| | I saw this program too Demeter. I was disgusted by what I saw but not really surprised.
Birdy, I agree with all you say, there's no way that the kennel Club aren't aware of what's going on. Definitely a bit inbred themselves lol.
My German Shepherd, Max, is a beautiful dog but definitely too pedigree for his own good. He has quite a few different problems. He is allergic to dust mites, which is a nightmare. German Shepherds are bred with a lower immune system than other dogs for some reason. It makes me very angry when I see how bad his skin gets sometimes, so uncomfortable for him and so unnecessary.
I have been a bit involved in the dog world (although never breeding) and do some dog behavioural work myself. I have to say that I find it to bring out the worst and best in people. There are some good breeders out there though, you just have to do some research to find them.
I have stepped back from all this for that reason. They all think they know best and that everyone else is wrong.
It is my intention to stick with good old rescue dogs in future, as my companions and helping them. |
