| 3 things I could not live without | | | Mathematics, music and martial arts |
| | | A bit about me... | | I work in higher education in London, and live in Cambridge. My interests (other than maths and computing) are martial arts (Brazilian jiu jitsu), and music. I play early keyboard (harpsichord) music rather badly, but am making progress. Professionally, I am pretty lucky to be doing something that I like for a living, and I enjoy teaching and research, and university life in general.
I have done martial arts of one kind or another since I was a kid, and still enjoy rolling about on the floor trying to choke people (mostly I am on the losing end of this though). It's all good clean fun, honest! Like one-on-one rugby, but without a ball. I was awarded a blue belt in November 2007 after 1.5 years training; I entered my first competition in February 2008 and won my first match, and lost the second. Not brilliant, but not bad.
As for music, I'm interested mainly in c16, c17, c18 harpsichord and organ music, and I have modern reconstruction of an c17 Italian virginals. Used to play classical guitar (for about 10 years) but gave it up a long time ago due to injuries and boredom. I took up keyboard a couple years ago after a long break from music making, and now can't imagine living without it.
On the other hand my teenage years were spent with slightly different styles of music, and I still have a thing for rock and metal. I like to see bands from time to time; last ones that I went to see were The Damned, and In Flames (not at the same time!).
My sense of humour is very Radio 4 (e.g. The News Quiz, I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue, Ed Reardon) and Private Eye, and I have a bit of a cynical streak (no, really) particularly when it comes to politics.
I like to cook, and try to do as much as possible from simplest possible ingredients (e.g. I make my own bread), and I also like Indian and middle eastern food, and will give anything (vegan) a go.
I have got a web page with a couple of pictures on, although it is a bit naff

| | | For me the benefits of being vegan/vegetarian are... | | | Health and fitness and not killing Mr Fluffy and friends. |
| | | Funniest/worst comment I regularly hear about being a veggie/vegan... | | | What if you were starving to death, would you eat this? |
| | | I am hoping to meet | | | Would like to meet an intelligent, fit, interesting and surprising woman - in the real three dimensional world, that is... |
| | | If I could be any animal for a day, I would be a... because... | | I'd like to be a hive-mind super-intelligent alien made up of billions of insectoid creatures spread throughout the galaxy.
Perhaps slightly more modestly I could be a bat and find out what the world looks like through sound instead of light.
Or a gecko, with microscopic nano-things on my toes and the ability to climb perfectly smooth surfaces and hang upside-down from the ceiling. |
| | | If I won the lottery I would... | | | Be very surprised, because (a) the probability of winning is 1/13983816, and (b) I don't play it anyway. |
| | | My favourite vegan / vegetarian meal is? | | | Quite like Indian food, but will give anything a go as long as it's nice and fresh. Things with chilies in are good. |
| | | My favourite vegan / vegetarian restaurant is? | | | Dunno. Bit bored with the last one. Any ideas? |
| | | My guests (living or dead, actual people or fictional characters) to the ultimate dinner party would include... | | | Grahame Greene, Umberto Eco, Henry Wilt, Blaise Pascal, Da Vinci, J S Bach |
| | | My ideal date would be (e.g. candlelit dinner) | | | Food related; preferably cooked by ourselves. |
| | | My ideal vacation would be | | | |
